Aquaculture
The government is committed to aquaculture development. Although the Ministry of Fisheries is the lead for aquaculture in New Zealand, aquaculture has become a whole-of-government initiative.
This means that six Ministers meet on a regular basis to address issues relating to aquaculture and that the chief executives of each of the agencies involved in aquaculture take an active role in aquaculture development. Beyond that, a team of staff across government coordinate and implement aquaculture initiatives.
The five key pillars in the government’s commitment are:
- Building the confidence to invest
- Improving public support
- Promoting Māori success
- Capitalising on research and innovation
- Increasing market revenues
