General Information

The Ministry of Fisheries (“the Ministry”), is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from organisations interested in delivering amateur charter vessel reporting and registration services, under the Fisheries Act 1996 (“the Fisheries Act”), from 1 October 2010.

It is intended that all amateur charter vessel operators will be required to report amateur charter vessel fishing activity and catch data. Amateur charter vessels as well as their operators will also need to be registered.

The current lack of information available on size and distribution of marine amateur fishers’ activity and catch are serious impediments to the better management of some New Zealand’s key inshore fisheries. Good information is required in the setting of sustainable catch limits, for decisions on access between sectors and in spatial planning.

The Fisheries Act allows for functions, duties and powers of the chief executive to be contracted to an external agency to deliver registry services.
