kingfish
Kingfish – minimum size of 75 cm
The bag limit remains at 3 per person per day.*
The new legal minimum size for recreational fishing is among a number of recent changes for the kingfish fishery.
Kingfish was introduced into the Quota Management System (QMS) on 1 October 2003, and commercial catch limits and non-commercial allowances were set for the first time.
The Ministry of Fisheries believes the increase in the recreational size limit will help keep the number of kingfish taken within the allowance set for recreational fishing, and also improve kingfish numbers so there are plenty for everyone, now and in the future.
Length measurement
Finfish length is measured from the tip of the nose to the rear end of the middle ray of the tail fin as shown here.

* There is a combined daily limit of five kingfish/hapuku/bass, but this cannot include more than 3 kingfish.
