Clarifying changes within the Coromandel Scallop fishery

The Ministry of Fisheries would like to clear up any confusion around the increase in the number of scallops that can be taken from the Coromandel fishery this season.

There is no change to the daily recreational bag limit which will remain at 20 scallops per person.

The changes affect the total allowances within the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for commercial fishing, recreational fishing, and customary fishing.

For recreational fishers, this means an increase from 7.5 tonnes to 10 tonnes meat weight.

The increase recognises that survey results showed an abundance of scallops which mean it is likely that people will fish to the existing bag limit more often this season.
