It is forbidden to take green-lipped mussels from the closed area. There are heavy penalties for breaching this law. If you do not read English, have someone translate this brochure for you.

About the Rähui
A rähui (closure) will apply to the taking of green-lipped mussels from the area between Moturiki (Leisure Island) and Motuotau (Rabbit Island) - known as Hopukiore - until 20 October 2007.
The rähui has been put in place, as a conservation measure, in response to local Māori and community concerns about the depletion of the green-lipped mussels in this area.
The iwi of Tauranga moana, the Ministry of Fisheries, and the local community are working together in promoting the protection of green-lipped mussels in this area to ensure the sustainability of this shellfish for present and future generations.
This area is policed by Fishery Officers and is closed under section 186A of the Fisheries Act 1996.
The penalties for breaching this law range from a fine of $5,000 to $100,000. Seizure and forfeiture provisions of the Fisheries Act 1996 will also apply.
