Relative abundance of stargazer in STA 5
Project: Relative abundance of stargazer in STA 5
Project Code: STA2004/02
Start Date: 1 October 2004
Completion Date: 30 September 2005
Overall Objective:
- To monitor the abundance of STA 5 using Catch and Effort data.
Specific Objectives:
- To update the standardised CPUE indices for STA 5 using data up to the end of 2003/2004.
Rationale:
General
Giant stargazer is caught principally around the South Island, and is an important bycatch of the domestic trawl fisheries targeting on red cod, tarakihi, flatfish, barracouta and scampi. Giant stargazer is a major by-catch of scampi fishing in STA 2, 3, and 4. Total landings range around 1100 t annually. About 80% of the stargazer catch in STA 5 is taken by inshore vessels targetting this species. Standardised indices (from 1989−90 to 1999−00) for the STA 5 target fishery were calculated using lognormal generalised linear models based on vessels that had fished three or more consecutive years and not including their zero catches. The indices showed no consistent trend. However, the Inshore Working Group has recommended that an alternative approach to this analysis be used in the future (i.e. using techniques to link data from the top and bottom parts of the various logbook forms).
Objectives 1
STA 5 is being monitored using CPUE indices. The current index covers 1989/90 to 1999/00. This project aims to add four more years to the time series (to the end of 2003/04).
Strategic Relevance
All the objectives in this project are consistent with the Fisheries Resources goal and Strategic Objectives in the Ministry of Fisheries Strategic Research Directions document.
