Dear Stakeholder
REVIEW OF SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES AND OTHER MANAGEMENT CONTROLS FOR THE 2004-05 FISHING YEAR FOR THE CAMPBELL ISLAND RISE SOUTHERN BLUE WHITING STOCK (SBW 6I)
Each year the Ministry of Fisheries (MFish) undertakes a process to review the management measures for some of New Zealand’s fisheries. The Initial Position Paper (IPP) provides you with MFish’s initial position on the sustainability measures and other management controls for the 2004-05 fishing year for SBW 6I. The purpose of this letter is to invite you to participate in this review process.
The IPP outlines a preliminary proposal to:
i) reduce the TAC and TACC for SBW 6I for the April 2004 – March 2005 fishing year to 20 000 tonnes; and
ii) consider a further reduction of the TAC and TACC for the April 2005 – March 2006 fishing year, to be informed by updated information, including that from industry acoustic surveys and data from the 2003 and 2004 fishing seasons (after review by the relevant working groups).
MFish is aware that industry collected acoustic data from the SBW 6I fishery during the 2003-04 fishing season. Industry is invited to present relevant findings as part of the consultation process. However, review of new information by the working group will be required before such information can be included as part of the stock assessment.
MFish welcomes written submissions on the matters contained within the IPP. Written submissions are due by 13 February 2004, and should be posted to Submissions, Standards Team, Ministry of Fisheries, PO Box 1020, Wellington. Alternatively, electronic submissions can be emailed to Emma.Knight@fish.govt.nz
Should you have any questions regarding the consultative process please contact:
Emma Knight (Emma.Knight@fish.govt.nz).
Finally, I note that all submissions that are received for the purposes of the sustainability measures process are publicly available under the Official Information Act 1982. Should any person or organisation wish for any information contained in their submission to be withheld under the Act, the grounds for withholding the information should be provided in the submission.
Yours sincerely
Steve Halley
