OUTPUT 33 - CUSTOMARY APPLICATIONS PROCESSED

DESCRIPTION

The management of applications from stakeholders to manage customary access, the evaluation of the applications and their subsequent approval or refusal. This output now includes implementation of the Fisheries Deed of Settlement.

EXPLANATION

This output provides for fisheries management advice on implementing customary fishing rights through:

  • the implementation of the customary rights and tools available in the customary regulations ie the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998 or the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999
  • the provision of facilitation resources to assist in the management of the relationship between the Ministry of Fisheries and tangata whenua.

As required, and within allowable resources, provide timely advice on the implementation of the
Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998 or the|
Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, including:

• appointment of kaitiaki
• establishment of mataitai reserves
• establishment of taiapure/local fisheries
• other Customary management proposals

Quality achieved, timeliness not achieved

Appointment of kaitiaki:

Appointed: 83 individuals covering 10 rohe
• in progress: 111+ individuals covering 13 rohe
• in dispute: 280 individuals covering 51 rohe.

Establishment of ma - taitai reserves:
• six applications are in progress and two more are inactive

Establishment of taiapure/local fisheries:
• no completions, three requests in progress.

Other customary management proposals:
• six temporary closures under sections 186A/B were completed.
