OUTPUT 12 INTERNATIONAL FISHERIES SUSTAINABILITY AND UTILISATION ADVICE PROVIDED
DESCRIPTION
Contribute to the development of bilateral, regional and multilateral frameworks for managing international fisheries, with the aim of:
- protecting the health of the aquatic environment
- enabling New Zealanders to get the best value from the sustainable and efficient use of fisheries.
EXPLANATION
The focus of this output is the sustainable use of international fisheries through the establishment of robust management regimes. The Ministry works to promote and protect New Zealand's fisheries interests through:
- maintenance of representation at and contribution to international institutions (eg the fisheries committees or working groups of APEC, the FAO, the UN, and the OECD)
- negotiation of frameworks and arrangements to improve the sustainable use of international fisheries.

Negotiating positions for those international meetings requiring a New Zealand position, and in which the Ministry of Fisheries is the lead agency, to be approved by the Minister of Fisheries prior to the meeting

During the year, Ministry staff attended a number of meetings related to New Zealand's international fisheries obligations, including consultations to discuss further progress on the establishment of a South Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement, confirmation of New Zealand's negotiating position on high seas bottom trawling and provision of the New Zealand update to OECD on management instruments and economic incentives. The report on economic drivers and impacts of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing was finalised for publication. An agreement was signed 17 December 2004 to reinforce fisheries cooperation between New Zealand and Argentina. In addition, the Ministry participated in the drafting of papers related to protection of high seas biodiversity. |
