Crown to appeal sentences in paua case
25 February 2005
The Crown is to appeal against sentences imposed by a District Court on two men who admitted charges in relation to paua poaching offences.
National Compliance Manager for the Ministry of Fisheries, Stephen Stuart today confirmed that the Solicitor-General had consented to an appeal in the cases of Messrs Karaitiana and Te Kaha on the grounds that the sentences of community service were manifestly inadequate.
Those convicted of commercial poaching offences faced maximum potential penalties of $250,000 in fines and five years in jail.
Papers had been filed and the Ministry would not be making any further comment pending hearing of the appeal.
