Auckland scallop season closes on 31 March

The Ministry of Fisheries reminds fishers in the northern North Island that the scallop season closes on Wednesday 31 March.

There was generally good behaviour in the fishery with most fishers obeying the rules - after a start to the season punctuated by greed on the part of a few fishers.

“We were pleased that most scallop fishers thought about their responsibilities and respected the rules,” said Ian Bright, Ministry of Fisheries Regional Manager for the north of New Zealand. “Some fishers tried to get in before the season started, something we didn’t tolerate. We won’t tolerate anyone trying to extend it for themselves either.

“Fishery Officers will be out and about over Easter making sure that members of the public know about the season closing and the good reasons for it.”

Fines of $250 to $500 per offence can be imposed on fishers who ignore the rules. Serious breaches can result in penalties up to $250,000 plus confiscation of diving gear, boats and vehicles.

The area affected by the closure includes Northland, Waikato, Coromandel and the Bay of Plenty. The next scallop season starts on 1 September, including for Kaipara Harbour. The scallop season in Nelson/Marlborough and Wellington closed last month.

“The Ministry’s Every Fish Counts summer awareness programme has been a success, including in the scallop fishery,” Ian Bright said. “We ask that the 4 million guardians of our fisheries remain vigilant and if you see anything suspicious on the beaches or your other favourite fishing spots, please don’t hesitate to call 0800 4 POACHER.”
