Management of the squid fishery

The Ministry of Fisheries is responsible for ensuring that sustainable catch limits are in place for all species managed under the Quota Management System. This responsibility extends not just to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fish species, such as squid, but also to the wider marine environment which includes sea lions, whales and the seabed.

Management decisions on sustainable catch limits are based on the best available science information. The Ministry of Fisheries would welcome an opportunity to review the results of recent research on the effects of the squid fishing on the pilot whale population. If necessary, this information will be taken into account when reviewing management measures for the squid fishery in the future.
