Deepwater and HMS National Fisheries Plans Approved by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture
22 December 2010
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture has recently approved the National Fisheries Plans for Deepwater and Highly Migratory Species (HMS). The fisheries plans will be used to guide prioritisation and planning of fisheries services for these fisheries.
The Minister is also required to take these plans into account before he sets or varies relevant sustainability measures, or makes decisions or recommendations under the Fisheries Act relating to deepwater and HMS fisheries, respectively.
In making his decision to approve the plans, the Minister acknowledged the commitment all stakeholders made to the fisheries plan development processes, and thanked all those involved for their efforts.
In addition to the National Plans, which have been approved by the Minister, fishery specific chapters for hoki and orange roughy have been completed. These chapters detail how these fisheries will be managed, in line with the management objectives outlined in the National Fisheries Plans.
