MFish Welcomes New Maui Dolphin Research
10 August 2004
The Ministry of Fisheries has welcomed new research on Maui dolphins, which it funded along with the Department of Conservation and the World Wildlife Fund, showing that, in winter, they appear to travel a wider distance than previously thought.
The research was delivered late last week, and the Ministry will now thoroughly analyse the results.
Late last year, to protect the Maui dolphin, prohibitions were placed on all set netting in the Manukau Harbour entrance area and on commercial set netting along much of the West Coast. The Maui dolphins are found only on the west coast of the North Island.
