Reminder On Koura Bag Limit

The Ministry of Fisheries has reminded the public that bag limits apply for recreational fishing of koura (freshwater crayfish). The maximum combined bag limit of 50 koura per person was first applied in September 1993.

"We did note a recent media report suggesting some people are taking 10 gallon bucket loads of koura from around the Rotorua lakes area," said Ministry spokesman Dave Allen. "It is possible that more than the maximum limit of 50 koura per person may be taken if 10 gallon buckets are used."

"Introducing a general bag limit to shellfish species not already regulated was designed to address issues of sustainable use of fishery resources. Many of these fisheries had not been used extensively on a recreational basis before, but once use increased, limits were needed to ensure sustainability over the longer term."

Mr Allen said information outlining the recreational bag limits for New Zealand's fisheries was available from the Ministry's offices or tackle shops. He asked the public to keep an eye out for possible illegal fishing around the Rotorua lakes, and said the Ministry's Tauranga office (07 577 1640) would appreciate reports of alleged illegal fishing activity, including identification details of vessels or car/trailer registration numbers.
