Extension Service Team 

The Pou Takawaenga ~ Extension Service Team started at the Ministry in May 2005. The Team has been employed to support the work of the Iwi Regional Forum which are currently being established by the Ministry’s Pou Hononga Team. The Team are available to assist the Iwi and Hapu that make up the Forum to achieve their fisheries management objectives. The team are part of the Ministry's current Deed of Settlement programme.

Pou Takawaenga - Our role

The role of the Pou Takawaenga is to assist with meeting the Ministry’s obligations to the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Claims Settlement Act 1992. The Pou Takawaenga role is to:

• Provide information to tangata whenua on fisheries management tools and current legislation that affects fisheries management. These tools include: fisheries and rohe moana management plans (RMMP), taiapure, mätaitai reserves, and the use of temporary measures. 
• Assist tangata whenua to develop a rohe moana management plan (RMMP). 
• Assist tangata whenua in developing appropriate fisheries management tools that achieve the objectives of the RMMP. 
• Assist tangata whenua to achieve their fisheries management vision through the use of the tools. 
• Provide guidance to tangata whenua on the relevant process to implement a chosen tool. 
• Provide assistance to tangata whenua to input and participate in fisheries management process, such as research planning.
