Aims of the Strategy

  • Four main levels:
    • The big picture, or “Why are we here?”
    • MFishstrategy and Iwi strategy
    • Structural level –how do we engage?
    • Operational level –the action plan

  • Up to iwi and hapugroups to determine
  • Proactive rather than reactive
  • Long term vision rather than short term
  • Integration of commercial and customary rights possible

Treaty Strategy Vision

  • MFishactively delivering on its fisheries settlement and Treaty obligations by achieving the following objectives:
    • MFishand tangata whenua working in partnership to provide for the utilisation of fisheries resources while ensuring sustainability
    • Tangata whenua managing customary fishing within their rohe
    • Maori actively participating in commercial fishing
    • Tangata whenua actively involved in wider fisheries management
    • MFishrecognising and providing for use and management practices of Maori in the management of fisheries
    • Active protection of the fisheries taonga
