CONSULTATION ON THE NORTH ISLAND WEST COAST FINFISH PLAN

INITIAL POSITION PAPER - JULY 2009

The Ministry of Fisheries has been working with tangata whenua and stakeholders to develop a number of Fisheries Plans. These plans identify the value different stakeholders obtain from the fishery, set objectives for the fishery to get best value, design the management of the fishery to achieve the objectives and make fisheries management more transparent.

The plan has been developed by an advisory group comprising tangata whenua, commercial, recreational stakeholder representatives, and MFish. This plan will eventually make up a chapter of a more encompassing Inshore Fisheries Plan that will be developed in future years.

The Minister is considering whether to approve, under section 11A of the Fisheries Act 1996, the plan’s objectives and general strategies. MFish is now consulting on the plan on behalf of the Minister of Fisheries.

Deadline for Submissions

MFish welcomes written submissions on North Island West Coast Finfish Plan.

Written submissions are due by Friday, 16 October 2009 and should be posted to Tracey Steel, Ministry of Fisheries, PO Box 1020, Wellington. Alternatively they can be e-mailed to tracey.steel@fish.govt.nz
