Cockle Bay shellfish stocks
This is an Initial Position Paper that addresses shellfish management issues at Cockle Bay, Manukau City.
This paper discusses the concerns about depletion of the shellfish resource, principally cockles, and proposes possible management solutions to address the concern. The paper proposes that MFish recommends to the Minister of Fisheries that he implements a seasonal closure over the summer period from 1 October to 30 April, inclusive. During the open season, 1 May to 30 September, the existing daily bag limits (50 per person) would apply. The document includes maps showing the proposed area over which the seasonal closure would apply.
The Ministry is seeking the views of Tangata Whenua and stakeholders on this proposal. Submissions should be sent to:
