Amalgamation of White Warehou Quota Management Areas 5 and 6

The Quota Management Areas (QMAs) white warehou 5 and 6 are being amalgamated under sections 25 and 25A of the Fisheries Act 1996.

MFish first consulted with stakeholders and tangata whenua on this proposal in 2005. Although the Minister agreed in principle to the proposal in late 2005, the amalgamation has been delayed due to concerns from Te Ohu Kai Moana (TOKM) that the Maori Fisheries Act 2004 did not then provide TOKM with the flexibility to adjust the allocation of settlement quota to accommodate the WWA 5 and 6 amalgamation. An amendment to the Maori Fisheries Act in late 2006 addressed those concerns. The quota share owners have informed MFish that they wish to continue seeking the Minister’s recommendation to amalgamate WWA 5 and 6.
