APPENDIX 2 – SEAMOUNT CLOSURES AND BENTHIC PROTECTED AREA PROPOSALS IN ORH 3B

  1. Nineteen area closures known as Seamount Closures were regulated in 2001. The Industry in collaboration with Government has proposed the establishment of Benthic Protected Areas (BPAs) to provide protection for biodiversity within New Zealand fisheries waters. The BPA proposal is undergoing consultation and it is expected that the Minister will decide on this matter prior to the October 1 beginning of the 2006-07 fishing year. The table below identifies the regions within ORH 3B that are closed to trawling and identifies the modifications to the closed areas from the BPA proposal.
