In January 2010, the Ministry of Fisheries consulted on an initial position paper outlining the Ministry’s views of an application from Wakatu Incorporation for a 770-hectare marine farm located approximately 3 nautical miles west of the southern tip of D’Urville Island in north-eastern Tasman Bay at the top of the South Island. The Ministry has now made a decision on this application. A copy of the decision paper is available for download below. The Ministry has approved the application because the delegated decision maker is satisfied that the activities contemplated by the application would not have an undue adverse effect on fishing or the sustainability of any fisheries resource. The proposed green-lipped mussel farm may now be developed in four stages, in accordance with an Adaptive Management Programme approved by the Marlborough District Council. Environmental monitoring will be undertaken at each stage. Development can proceed only if the Council is satisfied that the marine farm is not having a significant adverse effect on the environment.
