Review of Sustainability Measures for CRA 3, CRA 4, and CRA 7 Red Rock Lobster Fisheries for 1 April 2010

In December 2009, the National Rock Lobster Management Group (NRLMG) provided the Minister of Fisheries with initial advice on sustainability measures for the following rock lobster fisheries for the fishing year beginning 1 April 2010:

  • CRA 3 (Gisborne)
  • CRA 4 (Wellington/Hawkes Bay)
  • CRA 7 (Otago)

The Ministry of Fisheries consulted on the NRLMG’s initial advice on the Minister’s behalf between 17 December 2009 and 5 February 2010. The NRLMG provided the Minister with Final Advice in mid-February 2010 for consideration.

The Minister has made his decisions. These are reported in the decision letter available for download below:

In summary the Minister has decided to:

  1. Adopt the “Rule 2a” CRA 3 Management Procedure to guide Total Allowable Catch (TAC) setting for CRA 3 until the 2015-16 fishing year; and, based on the application of the management procedure, retain the current CRA 3 TAC of 293 tonnes and retain the current allowances for the 2010-11 fishing year.

  2. Increase the CRA 4 TAC from 461 tonnes to 610.625 tonnes, and increase the CRA 4 Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) accordingly from 266 tonnes to 415.625 tonnes.

  3. Decrease the CRA 7 TAC from 209 tonnes to 104.5 tonnes, and increase the CRA 7 TACC accordingly from 189 tonnes to of 84.5 tonnes.
