Review of Kahawai Stocks (KAH1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 10)

In June 2010, the Ministry of Fisheries consulted on proposals to review the TACs, allowances, TACCs, and other management controls for all kahawai stocks to take effect from 1 October 2010.

The Minister has now made his decisions, based on the final advice paper (available for download below) and after considering submissions. His decisions are outlined in the press release (also available below). The reasons for the Minister’s decisions are outlined in his decision letter, which will be posted on this page shortly.

In summary, for KAH 1, the Minister decided to make a technical adjustment to the total catch limit and to recreational and customary Maori allowances to reflect new scientific advice on the actual current non-commercial catch levels. Because this reduction is only a technical adjustment, no change to non-commercial catch levels is intended and no change was made to recreational fishing rules or daily bag limits. Commercial catch limits will not change from current levels.

For all other kahawai stocks, the Minister decided to retain the current management measures.
