In February 2010 the Ministry of Fisheries completed a collaborative research services strategy review. One of the recommendations of that review was that the Ministry develop standards for the provision of research used in fisheries management.Fisheries standards are a key component of the Ministry’s comprehensive fisheries management regime designed to provide sustainable fisheries now and in the future. The draft Research Standard is essentially a policy statement of best practice in relation to the quality assurance of science information that is intended or likely to inform fisheries management decisions, development of environmental standards or formulation of relevant fisheries policy, irrespective of the source of that information. It also provides stakeholders with guidance on science quality assurance expectations for research that they hope will inform fisheries management decisions. It is critical that all the research used to inform the management of New Zealand’s fisheries is of the highest standard and the Research Standard is designed to help the Ministry, research providers and stakeholders to achieve this. The Ministry seeks your views on the draft Research Standard. The draft has been prepared on the basis of a review of international best practice and in consultation with independent experts.
