National Fisheries Plan for Deepwater and Middle-Depth Fisheries

Part 1A of the National Fisheries Plan for Deepwater and Middle-depth Fisheries (the National Deepwater Plan) has been approved by the Minister of Fisheries under section 11A of the Fisheries Act. The National Deepwater Plan was created in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries , representatives from environmental organisations and, deepwater quota owners.

Part 1A of the National Deepwater Plan describes the management objectives that will apply across all deepwater fisheries and will guide their management for the next five years. The Minister is required to take Part 1A of this plan into account before setting or varying relevant sustainability measures or make decisions or recommendations under the Fisheries Act 1996. Part 1A will also be used to guide prioritisation and planning of fisheries services.

Part 1B of the National Deepwater Plan contains fishery specific chapters which describe how the management objectives will influence individual deepwater and middle-depth species and fisheries. There will be nine fisheries chapters in total. The Minister has received copies of the completed hoki and orange roughy chapters with the others to follow upon completion.
