REVIEW OF SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES FOR CRA 3, CRA 4, CRA 7 AND CRA 8 RED ROCK LOBSTER FISHERIES FOR 1 APRIL 2009
In December 2008, the National Rock Lobster Management Group (NRLMG) provided the Minister of Fisheries with initial advice on sustainability measures for the following rock lobster fisheries for the 2009-10 fishing year, beginning 1 April 2009:
- CRA 3 (Gisborne)
- CRA 4 (Wellington/Hawke Bay)
- CRA 7 (Otago)
- CRA 8 (Southern).
The Ministry of Fisheries consulted on the proposals on the Minister’s behalf between 15 December 2008 and 9 February 2009. The NRLMG provided the Minister with Final Advice in mid-February 2009 for consideration.
The Minister has made his decisions. These are reported in the decision letter available for download below:

In summary the Minister has decided to:
- Decrease the CRA 3 Total Allowable Catch (TAC) from 319 tonnes to 293 tonnes, and set a Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) of 164 tonnes
- Adopt a management procedure in CRA 4 to guide TAC and TACC setting for 3 years; and, based on the operation of this management procedure, decrease the CRA 4 TAC from 771 tonnes to 460 tonnes, and set a TACC of 266 tonnes
- Increase the CRA 7 TAC from 143.88 tonnes to 209 tonnes, and set a TACC of 189 tonnes
- Increase the CRA 8 TAC from 1053 tonnes to 1110 tonnes, and set a TACC of 1019 tonnes.
