Hector’s and Maui’s dolphin draft Threat Management Plan

In August 2007 the Ministry of Fisheries and the Department of Conservation released the draft Hector’s and Maui’s dolphin Threat Management Plan (TMP) for public consultation. The draft TMP:

• Described the nature and extent of threats to Hectors and Maui’s dolphins, and
• Outlined strategies to reduce human-induced threats. In particular, the draft TMP included a range of options to avoid, remedy, and mitigate the effect of fishg-related mortality on Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins.

The draft TMP built on material released in a discussion document in May 2007 and incorporated response to that document including feedback gained during regional forums.
The Ministry invited views on the draft TMP.

The Draft Threat Management Plan consists of three key sections:

1. Context– what we know about New Zealand’s dolphin situation
This section also introduces regional threat management proposals that incorporate fishing related options, proposed non-fishing measures, marine mammal sanctuaries, research and monitoring.
