Final advice and decisions on fisheries measures

In August 2007 the Ministry of Fisheries and the Department of Conservation released the draft Hector’s and Maui’s Dolphin Threat Management Plan (TMP) for two months public consultation. The draft TMP included options to avoid, remedy, and mitigate the effect of fishing-related mortality on Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins. The Ministry also consulted on (i) the potential socio-economic impacts of the measures in the draft TMP and on (ii) new science information that became available early in 2008.

The Ministry provided the Minister of Fisheries with a final advice paper on fisheries measures for the TMP at the start of May 2008. The Minister announced his decisions on 29 May. The measures the Minister announced are drawn from the range of options consulted on in the draft TMP, and from the range of options in the final advice.

The Ministry's final advice paper to the Minister is also available for download. The paper was split into two volumes:

• Volume 1 is the substantive advice document and includes the final advice papers for each regional dolphin population[1].
• Volume 2 includes the Appendices, including the summary of submissions.
