General Information - Foreign fishing vessels arriving in NZ from the high seas

Foreign fishing vessels arriving from the high seas are required to make the following notifications to NZ Fisheries Communication Centre (FCC).

  1. 24 hours notice of intention to enter / exit New Zealand's exclusive economic zone giving notice of -
    a. name and international call sign of vessel
    b. position of intended entry / exit
    c. species, quantity and condition of catch on board or confirmation that there is NO Fish Product onboard the vessel
    d. Intended action

  2. Zone Entry and Exit - New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (ZN EEZ)
    a. report type (ZENT for entry and ZEXT for exit)
    b. date and time (UTC)
    c. name and international call sign of vessel
    d. position of entry / exit

    as: ZENT (or ZEXT) / ddmmyy / TIME / NAME / CALL SIGN / LA 1111 / LO 11111

  3. Port Entry reports, 72 hours notice prior to port entry
    a. report type (PENT)
    b. date and time (UTC)
    c. name and international call sign of vessel
    d. estimated time of entry into port (UTC)
    e. port name
    f. Intended action in port

    as: PENT / ddmmyy / TIME / NAME / CALL SIGN / LA 1111 / LO 11111 / ETA / PORT NAME / INTENDED ACTION

    Vessels unloading fish in New Zealand must do so at one of the following authorised ports: Auckland, Bluff, Dunedin, Gisborne, Lyttelton, Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth, Port Chalmers, Tauranga, Timaru, Wellington, and Whangarei.

  4. While in the New Zealand exclusive economic zone and underway;
    a. notification of daily noon positions

Foreign fishing vessels arriving from the high seas with Fish onboard.

Foreign fishing vessels arriving with fish onboard are required to apply for an Approval to possess fish in New Zealand fisheries waters - section 113(1)(a)(ii) Fisheries Act 1996.

  • This application applies to all foreign vessels whether intending to discharge their product or the product is to remain onboard.
  • Applications must be lodged on the approved form and applicants must allow TEN working days for processing.
